Steps:
1. Research your animal. You may do this by:
a) Searching the internet for valid, reliable material on your topic. Avoid sites that end in .org.
b) Online encyclopedias/articles (most encyclopedias require a subscription)
*www.animal.discovery.com has some good articles on animals
c) Go to a public library and check out books (best option)
2. Know what you’re researching and take careful notes on the information you’re reading. It’s important that you are not copying down word for word what your resource states. An easy way to take notes is to read a paragraph a couple times, then write down all the important things you remember from that paragraph. Go back and verify the information you wrote down was accurate and include any details you may have forgotten.
3. Keep everything organized. This will make the process much easier for you. Keep notes for different components separated and ordered. Once all notes and research has been completed, organize your report (I will pass out a graphic organizer). You will need to know what each paragraph is going to be about and what supporting details it will contain.
Make sure each paragraph is focused. It should be about one topic and one topic only.
You have a wide variety of sentences: short, medium, long. Make them interesting and make them flow together.
You use appropriate word choice. Avoid ‘dead words’.
Avoid awkward sentences and phrases. Read it aloud. If it doesn’t sound right, it’s probably not written correctly.
